Initially the spiral staircase would have stopped at the Great hall as the new attic would not have existed. Prior to the 19th century the main hall would have been full height then a new ceiling was added and the new attic came into existence.

Initially access would have been by using a ladder to access the upper level then a wooden spiral staircase was constructed and made its way to the new room at the top. It was not until 1912 that a new stone spiral staircase, two new windows and a brand new roof was added.
